Board of Directors

Michael Levinthal

Mike has over 28 years of venture capital investing experience and currently lives in Park City, Utah where he works as Managing Partner of Levinthal Capital and advises companies in the intermountain area. Mike spent 20 years with the Mayfield Fund. During his tenure at Mayfield, Mike worked to sponsor such successes as Citrix, Concur Technologies, Heartstream, Pure Software and WebMethods. Additionally, he founded Mayfield Software Partners, a side fund consisting of 20 leading software entrepreneurs as investors.

Mike began his career in venture capital at New Enterprise Associates (NEA). While at NEA, Mike founded ONSET Ventures, a venture firm specializing in incubating new companies. Additionally, he sits on the board of the Forever Young Foundation (www.foreveryoung.com).

Mike holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He received both his MS and BS degrees in Engineering from Stanford University. He has served as an advisory board member to the Stanford Technology Venture Program and established the Mayfield Fellows program at Stanford University and University of California at Berkeley.

Mike’s current board seats include Applabs, Alliance Health, Zinch, Biostorica, High West Distillery and 3point5.

Nick Efstratis

Nick is a Managing Director with Epic Ventures. He has been a venture capitalist investing in early stage technology companies for the past 8 years. Prior to joining Epic Ventures, Nick worked in the Business Development Group at Excite and was a founding member of the management team of NetDocuments (www.netdocuments.com). Nick and his family are the founders and operators of RanchLife Adventures (www.ranchlife.com), a working cattle and guest ranch located in Montana. He has a B.S. in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Accounting/Economics from Brigham Young University. His M.B.A. is from the Marriott School (marriottschool.byu.edu) at BYU.

Nick is responsible for the oversight of the following Epic portfolio companies: Tricipher (tricipher.com), Medsphere Systems (www.medsphere.com), Lignup (www.lignup.com), Mozy (www.mozy.com) (sold to EMC), Bungee Labs (www.bungeelabs.com), The Generations Network (www.epicvc.com/people/portfolio12/www.tgn.com) (sold to Spectrum Equity) and SmileReminder (www.smilereminder.com/home.do).

Phil Reed

Phil has led a distinguished career in the technology industry since co-founding both IMSAI/ComputerLand (NASDAQ: CLND) in 1975 and BusinessLand (NYSE: BLI) in 1982. IMSAI was one of the earliest manufacturers of Intel 8000-series microcomputers, then became ComputerLand, the first and largest dedicated distribution channel for personal computers. In 1992, he became President & CEO of SkyStar Aircraft Corporation, manufacturer of the popular Kitfox aircraft which is sold in 27 countries. In all, Phil has founded or co-founded more than a dozen companies in his career. Phil has served as Chairman of multiple of the firm’s portfolio companies including @Last Software which was acquired by Google. In 2004, Phil succeeded in co-founding Boise’s first organized Angel group, The Boise Angel Alliance.

Phil is a graduate of Harvard University. Throughout his career, he has shown leadership in small business origination, development, and mentoring of executive teams. With more than 30 years of experience in founding and building companies, Phil is in an ideal position and incredibly passionate about mentoring young startup companies. His other passions are family, flying, and teaming with his wife Jill in caring for the multitude of animals that find their way in and out of their home. Despite our best efforts, Phil will always consider himself more an entrepreneur than a venture capitalist.

Tom Simone

Tom joined our board in September 2009 and is also responsible for building and guiding our healthcare industry advisory board. Tom is currently a director of United Natural Foods (NASDAQ: UNFI), the largest distributor in the natural, organic and specialty products industry with annual sales of $3.5 billion and more than 6,000 associates. In 1996, he became the first outside director of UNFI and he was its chairman or vice chairman between 1999 and 2009.

Prior to joining the UNFI Board, Tom spent 23 years with McKesson Corporation (NYSE: MCK), now a $105 billion supplier of pharmaceuticals, health and beauty care products. During his time with McKesson, Tom filled a variety of senior executive positions for the firm and its subsidiaries, including president of McKesson Drug Company and executive vice president and chief financial officer of PCS Health Systems, now part of CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS).

Tom is currently on the boards of directors of UNFI, Alliance Health Networks, Christian Charities USA and Sonoma Land Trust. He is on the advisory boards of Nature’s Equity and 2X Consumer Products Growth Partners. Prior to joining McKesson, Tom received B.S. and M.B.A. degrees in Finance and Accounting from DePaul University. He was also employed by Keebler Company and Motorola, Inc. and was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
