Board of Directors

Andy Donner

Andy is a Director with Physic Ventures and has 15 years of investment and management experience in the information technology, healthcare and consumer product industries. At Physic Ventures, Andy focuses on investments in the Connected Health sector which includes digital media, monitoring solutions, health e-games, technology-enabled health delivery, innovative retail, wellness programs and disease management. Andy was previously a Senior Associate with Great Spirit Ventures, a venture capital firm which invested in early-stage companies in the health and wellness marketplace. At Great Spirit Ventures, Andy focused on consumer product investments including Attune Foods, Brand New Brands, LightFull Foods, The Natural Dentist and Corazonas Foods.

Formerly, Andy spent six years founding, building and managing rapid-growth companies in the high-tech and digital media industries, including atMadison.com, where he served as Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer; Entopia, where he established and directed the product marketing department; and LeapFrog Enterprises, where he developed new business opportunities in the healthcare industry. Andy graduated cum laude from Duke University's pre-med program and earned his MBA at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was awarded full-tuition as a Haas Merit Scholar. While earning his MBA, Andy served as a Graduate Student Instructor for one of the school's leading entrepreneurship courses and was elected President of the Berkeley chapter of Net Impact, an international organization of business school students committed to social responsibility and environment stewardship.

Nick Efstratis

Nick is a Managing Director with Epic Ventures. He has been a venture capitalist investing in early stage technology companies for the past 8 years. Prior to joining Epic Ventures, Nick worked in the Business Development Group at Excite and was a founding member of the management team of NetDocuments (www.netdocuments.com). Nick and his family are the founders and operators of RanchLife Adventures (www.ranchlife.com), a working cattle and guest ranch located in Montana. He has a B.S. in Entrepreneurship with a minor in Accounting/Economics from Brigham Young University. His M.B.A. is from the Marriott School (marriottschool.byu.edu) at BYU.

Nick is responsible for the oversight of the following Epic portfolio companies: Tricipher (tricipher.com), Medsphere Systems (www.medsphere.com), Lignup (www.lignup.com), Mozy (www.mozy.com) (sold to EMC), Bungee Labs (www.bungeelabs.com), The Generations Network (www.epicvc.com/people/portfolio12/www.tgn.com) (sold to Spectrum Equity) and SmileReminder (www.smilereminder.com/home.do).

Adam Koopersmith

Adam is a Partner with New World Ventures where he focuses on identifying opportunities and building successful companies dedicated to bringing to market novel SaaS applications, interactive marketing solutions or interactive health applications. Prior to joining New World Ventures, Adam held various senior operating and business development roles at Sportvision, helping the company grow from the “business plan” stage to eight figures in annual revenue. Prior to Sportvision, Adam worked at Berkshire Partners, a leading private equity investment firm with $6.0 billion of capital under management. His experience at Berkshire included investment evaluations and closed transactions in several industries, including business services, retail and manufacturing, in addition to significant work helping portfolio companies achieve their strategic objectives. Before joining Berkshire, Adam worked as an investment banker for Alex Brown (now Deutsche Bank) and participated in a broad range of merger and acquisition and public equity transactions for mid-sized companies.

Adam currently serves on several corporate boards and is a member of the Investment Committee for the Illinois Innovation Accelerator Fund (i2A) – a public-private seed-stage investment fund. He is also on the Board of Excelerate, a mentor-driven seed investment program based in Chicago. Adam graduated with a B.S. in economics with concentrations in finance and international management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his M.B.A. from the Kellogg School of Management with concentrations in organizational behavior and decision sciences.

Michael Levinthal

Mike has over 28 years of venture capital investing experience and currently lives in Park City, Utah where he works as Managing Partner of Levinthal Capital and advises companies in the intermountain area. Mike spent 20 years with the Mayfield Fund. During his tenure at Mayfield, Mike worked to sponsor such successes as Citrix, Concur Technologies, Heartstream, Pure Software and WebMethods. Additionally, he founded Mayfield Software Partners, a side fund consisting of 20 leading software entrepreneurs as investors.

Mike began his career in venture capital at New Enterprise Associates (NEA). While at NEA, Mike founded ONSET Ventures, a venture firm specializing in incubating new companies. Additionally, he sits on the board of the Forever Young Foundation (www.foreveryoung.org).

Mike holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He received both his MS and BS degrees in Engineering from Stanford University. He has served as an advisory board member to the Stanford Technology Venture Program and established the Mayfield Fellows program at Stanford University and University of California at Berkeley.

Mike’s current board seats include Applabs, Alliance Health, Zinch, Biostorica, High West Distillery and 3point5.

Phil Reed

Phil has led a distinguished career in the technology industry since co-founding both IMSAI/ComputerLand (NASDAQ: CLND) in 1975 and BusinessLand (NYSE: BLI) in 1982. IMSAI was one of the earliest manufacturers of Intel 8000-series microcomputers, then became ComputerLand, the first and largest dedicated distribution channel for personal computers. In 1992, he became President & CEO of SkyStar Aircraft Corporation, manufacturer of the popular Kitfox aircraft which is sold in 27 countries. In all, Phil has founded or co-founded more than a dozen companies in his career. Phil has served as Chairman of multiple of the firm's portfolio companies including @Last Software which was acquired by Google. In 2004, Phil succeeded in co-founding Boise's first organized Angel group, The Boise Angel Alliance.

Phil is a graduate of Harvard University. Throughout his career, he has shown leadership in small business origination, development, and mentoring of executive teams. With more than 30 years of experience in founding and building companies, Phil is in an ideal position and incredibly passionate about mentoring young startup companies. His other passions are family, flying, and teaming with his wife Jill in caring for the multitude of animals that find their way in and out of their home. Despite our best efforts, Phil will always consider himself more an entrepreneur than a venture capitalist.

Tom Simone

Tom joined our board in September 2009 and is also responsible for building and guiding our healthcare industry advisory board. Tom Simone is President and CEO of Simone & Associates, a firm that invests in and consults with healthcare and natural products companies. Investments have included: East Earth Herb, IBV Technologies, Spectrum Organic Products, Eco-DenT and Lightfull Foods.

Tom is Chairman Emeritus of United Natural Foods (UNFI), the largest distributor to the natural, organic and specialty products industry. UNFI is the primary distributor to Whole Foods, the leading natural retail chain, as well as serving conventional supermarkets and independent natural food stores. Current sales are $4+ billion. UNFI employs more than 6,000 associates. Tom was the initial outside director of UNFI in 1996, before it went public. He was Chairman for 6 years and Vice Chair and Lead Independent Director for 4 years.

Prior to joining the UNFI Board, Tom spent 23 years with McKesson Corporation (NYSE: MCK), now a $105 billion supplier of pharmaceuticals, health and beauty care products. During his time with McKesson, Tom filled a variety of senior executive positions for the firm and its subsidiaries, including president of McKesson Drug Company and executive vice president and chief financial officer of PCS Health Systems, now part of CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS).

Tom is currently on the advisory boards of Nature's Equity, Reklaim, 2X Consumer Products Growth Partners and is Chairman of Alliance Health’s Advisory Board. Prior to joining McKesson, Tom received B.S. and M.B.A. degrees in Finance and Accounting from DePaul University. He was also employed by Keebler Company and Motorola, Inc. and was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps.
